Millennials — those born roughly between 1981 and 1996 — are now the largest generation in the global workforce. They bring energy, digital fluency, and a genuine desire to do meaningful work. But they also have high expectations of their employers — and they are not afraid to leave if those expectations are not met. This is the first in our series of HR challenges, and it is one that almost every organisation faces.
Research on millennial workplace preferences consistently highlights a number of recurring themes:
Make sure your employer brand clearly articulates the mission and values of your organisation. This should be visible in your job postings, your careers page, your social media presence, and every touchpoint of the candidate experience.
Be specific about what candidates can expect to learn and how they can grow within your organisation. Generic statements about "opportunities for growth" are not convincing — concrete examples and clear career pathways are.
A slow, opaque, or disorganised hiring process signals a lot about how your organisation operates. Millennials pay attention to the candidate experience. Make it fast, clear, communicative, and genuinely two-way.
The most common reason millennials leave an organisation early is that the reality of the role or culture did not match what was communicated during recruitment. Honest, transparent hiring is not just the right thing to do — it is also the most effective long-term strategy.
Regular learning opportunities, mentoring, stretch assignments, and clear progression pathways all contribute significantly to millennial retention.
Build a culture where feedback is a natural, continuous part of work — not a formal, annual event. This is one of the highest-impact changes a manager can make.
Attracting and retaining millennials is not about gimmicks — it is about being a genuinely great employer. The good news is that the things millennials want — purpose, development, feedback, flexibility — are things that benefit everyone in your workforce.
