Best ATS-integrated assessment tools compared for 2026

What is the best ATS-integrated assessment tool in 2026? The best one sends assessments automatically from a stage in your ATS, writes scores and reports back to the candidate record as data you can filter on, and uses tests that predict performance in the role. For enterprise teams, that combination is what makes quality of hire measurable. Which tool fits best depends mostly on the ATS you already run.

Almost every assessment vendor says it integrates with your ATS. In practice, that ranges from a link you paste by hand to a two-way connection that moves candidates through your pipeline. This guide compares five assessment tools that come up often when HR teams look for ATS-integrated testing, and gives you the criteria to compare them yourself.

This guide is written by Selection Lab, so our own product is in it. We also say where another tool is the better fit, for example when you run an enterprise suite such as Workday or SAP SuccessFactors.

Quick verdict by situation

  • Best for teams on Recruitee, Teamtailor, Workable, SmartRecruiters or a Benelux ATS such as OTYS, Carerix or Recruitnow, with screening and assessment in one flow: Selection Lab.
  • Best for large enterprises on Workday that want an established global test library: SHL.
  • Best for high-volume hiring on Workday or SAP SuccessFactors: Harver.
  • Best for the widest list of ATS connectors, especially in the US: Criteria.
  • Best for a large self-service skills test library with marketplace connectors: TestGorilla.

What ATS-integrated really means

Integration depth matters more than the number of logos on a vendor's integrations page. Roughly, there are three levels.

Level 1: manual link

The recruiter copies an assessment link into an email or the ATS. Results arrive as a PDF or in a separate portal. It works, but someone has to remember every step, and the data never becomes reportable.

Level 2: send from the ATS

The recruiter sends an assessment from the candidate profile or a pipeline stage. Status and a report link come back to the candidate. This saves time, but candidates still move through stages by hand.

Level 3: two-way, stage-driven

Moving a candidate to a stage triggers the assessment automatically. When the candidate finishes, scores land in structured fields and the candidate moves to the next stage based on the outcome. Recruiters do not switch systems, and you can report on assessment data next to hiring outcomes.

For quality of hire, level 3 is what you want. Only structured scores can be linked to performance, retention and hiring manager ratings later.

Six criteria to compare ATS-integrated assessment tools

1. Integration depth with your ATS. Ask for a live demo inside your own ATS. Check triggers, status updates and what lands on the candidate record.

2. Structured results. Scores or match levels should be fields, not attachments. Otherwise you cannot filter, compare or report.

3. Assessment quality. Ask for validity and reliability documentation per test. A fast integration with weak tests just moves weak data faster.

4. Quality-of-hire measurement. Can you link assessment scores to outcomes such as 90-day retention, performance ratings or time to productivity?

5. GDPR and EU AI Act. Where data is stored, how consent is recorded, who sees which results and what documentation the vendor supplies for your DPIA.

6. Candidate experience and drop-off. Mobile-friendly tests, short duration and a flow without extra logins. Every extra step costs candidates.

The best ATS-integrated assessment tools compared

1. Selection Lab

Selection Lab combines assessments with AI agents for screening, scheduling and reactivation. It has native integrations with 12 ATS systems: Recruitee, Teamtailor, Workable, SmartRecruiters, Jobylon, Carerix, Emply, OTYS, Recruitnow, Mysolution, Byner and Ubeeo. You can see all of them on the integrations page.

Depth differs per ATS, but many connections are stage-driven. In Ubeeo, a candidate moves to the stage that matches the outcome after each step, for both pass and fail. In Mysolution and Byner, status, score and report link are written back, and Byner also receives top competency scores as skills on the contact. In Jobylon and Carerix, a match score appears on the candidate when a job profile is linked. In Recruitee and Teamtailor you can also run the Screening AI agent, which screens over WhatsApp, runs assessments in the same chat and books interviews.

  • Strengths: screening, assessment and scheduling in one flow; deep integrations with ATS systems common in the Benelux and Nordics; candidates control when their results are shared; data stored in Frankfurt; live in 2 to 10 weeks.
  • Watch out for: no native connector listed for Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, Greenhouse or iCIMS. Teams on those suites should ask about the options or look at the vendors below.
  • Results reported by clients: 27% fewer drop-offs and 15 minutes saved per applicant.

2. SHL

SHL offers a broad assessment library across seniority levels. On its website, SHL describes itself as a certified Workday partner with two Workday Recruiting integrations: an inline assessment that is part of the application for high-volume roles, and an ad hoc assessment that can be sent at any stage. Scores and reports go back to Workday automatically, according to SHL.

  • Fits: global enterprises on Workday that want an established test publisher.
  • Check: which integrations exist for your ATS if it is not Workday, and the implementation timeline.

3. Harver

Harver focuses on high-volume hiring with situational judgement, personality and game-based assessments. In 2024 Harver announced a Workday-certified integration that connects all its platform assessments to Workday Recruiting, including results, interview guides and development reports. Its knowledge base also has integration articles for SAP SuccessFactors and Workable.

  • Fits: large employers with volume hiring on Workday or SuccessFactors.
  • Check: fit for smaller hiring volumes and Benelux ATS systems.

4. Criteria

Criteria offers cognitive, personality and skills tests and an optional AI proctoring add-on. Its integrations page lists around 45 ATS partners, including Greenhouse, iCIMS, Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, SmartRecruiters, Teamtailor, Workable and Carerix.

  • Fits: teams that need a connector for a less common ATS, especially in the US.
  • Check: what exactly syncs back for your ATS. The integrations page does not specify this per connector.

5. TestGorilla

TestGorilla has a large library of skills tests that teams can set up themselves. It lists integrations with Greenhouse, iCIMS, Lever, Workday, Recruitee, SAP SuccessFactors, SmartRecruiters, Teamtailor and Workable, among others. According to TestGorilla, scores, rankings and invitation status sync to the candidate record. ATS integrations are part of its Plus plan.

  • Fits: teams that want to build their own test combinations quickly.
  • Check: which plan you need for the integration, and validity documentation per test.

How to measure quality of hire with ATS data

An integration is only the start. Quality of hire becomes measurable when assessment data and hiring outcomes sit in the same place.

  1. Store scores as fields. Make sure match scores or competency scores land on the candidate record, not just a PDF.
  2. Pick two or three outcome measures. For example, retention after 90 days, the hiring manager's rating after six months and time to productivity.
  3. Compare by score band. Do hires with a high match score stay longer and get better ratings than hires with a low one? That tells you whether the test predicts.
  4. Adjust the job profile. If a competency does not relate to outcomes, give it less weight. If it does, move it earlier in the process.

We go deeper into this in our guide on measuring quality of hire with skill tests.

How to choose the right tool

  1. Start from your ATS. List which vendors have a native, two-way integration with the system you use today and the one you might move to.
  2. Find your bottleneck. Too many unsuitable applicants, too much manual work or no data on which hires work out? Each points to a different tool.
  3. Run a real vacancy in the demo. Use your own pipeline stages and check what lands on the candidate record.
  4. Ask for compliance documents. Data location, consent per purpose, retention periods, validity documentation and input for your DPIA.
  5. Agree on KPIs before go-live. Completion rate, time to interview, hours saved per vacancy and at least one quality-of-hire measure.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ATS-integrated assessment tool?

It is an assessment platform that connects to your applicant tracking system. Assessments are sent from the ATS, often automatically at a pipeline stage, and results such as scores, status and reports come back to the candidate record.

Which assessment tools integrate with Workday?

SHL, Harver, Criteria and TestGorilla all list a Workday integration on their websites. Check what is synced back and whether the integration is certified before you choose.

Which assessment tools integrate with Recruitee or Teamtailor?

Selection Lab, TestGorilla and Criteria list integrations with Teamtailor, and Selection Lab and TestGorilla also list Recruitee. Selection Lab can run AI agents for screening and scheduling from both ATS systems as well.

How do assessments improve quality of hire?

Validated assessments measure what predicts performance, such as cognitive ability, personality and skills, in the same way for every candidate. When scores are stored in your ATS, you can link them to retention and performance and see which scores predict success.

What should sync back from an assessment tool to the ATS?

At minimum the invitation and completion status, a score or match level in a structured field and a link to the full report. Ideally the candidate also moves to the next stage automatically based on the outcome.

FAQ

Can game-based assessments promote diversity in the hiring process?

Yes, game-based assessments can support diversity by focusing on skills and behaviors rather than traditional criteria like résumés, which may contain unconscious biases. This gives candidates from diverse backgrounds a fairer chance to demonstrate their potential.

What is a game-based assessment?

A game-based assessment is a method that uses game mechanics to evaluate a candidate’s skills, competencies, and personality traits. While playing these games, candidates are assessed on aspects like problem-solving, cognitive ability, and behavior under pressure in an interactive way.

What are the advantages of game-based assessments?

Game-based assessments offer a more engaging and interactive experience for candidates, which can lead to a more positive perception of the hiring process—especially among certain groups. For employers, they provide deeper insights into both cognitive and behavioral traits, which traditional tests may miss. They also reduce the chance of socially desirable answers, as candidates tend to respond more authentically in a game environment.

How reliable are game-based assessments compared to traditional tests?

When well-designed, game-based assessments can be just as reliable—or even more reliable—than traditional tests. They assess a wide range of behaviors and cognitive abilities in a dynamic setting. However, the quality of these assessments varies greatly, so careful evaluation is essential.

How does a game-based assessment work?

Candidates participate in interactive games designed to measure specific skills and behaviors. Evaluation goes beyond just the final score—it also considers how the candidate makes decisions, handles challenges, and responds to different scenarios. These insights reveal underlying thought processes and behavioral patterns.

Are game-based assessments scientifically validated?

The main drawback is that many game-based assessments are relatively new and have not yet been extensively researched by independent academics. Providers often cite their own research, which is rarely externally validated. Without independent studies, the reliability of these assessments remains uncertain—something to keep in mind when selecting one.

How can game based assessments contribute to a better candidate experience

This can vary significantly by audience. The playful, interactive nature of game-based assessments can lower stress levels for some candidates compared to traditional tests. However, research shows that certain groups, especially those over 35, may find them more stressful. Men also tend to rate the experience more positively than women.

Can you practice game-based assessment?

You can familiarize yourself with the style of games used, but it’s difficult to "practice" for them in a traditional sense. These assessments are designed to measure natural reactions and authentic behavior, so repeated practice typically has less effect on performance than with traditional tests.

Will game-based assessments replace traditional tests in the future?

It’s likely that game-based assessments will become more common in hiring processes, but they probably won’t fully replace traditional tests. Both approaches have value and can complement each other depending on the role and the company’s needs.

How are the results of a game-based assessment analyzed?

Results are analyzed based on predefined criteria such as problem-solving ability, reaction time, and behavior under pressure. Advanced algorithms collect and interpret this data to provide a reliable, objective evaluation of a candidate’s strengths.

What kind of skills do game-based assessments measure?

They assess a wide range of abilities, including problem-solving, adaptability, decision-making under pressure, teamwork, and emotional intelligence. Depending on the design, they may also evaluate cognitive skills like memory, attention, and pattern recognition.

How long does a game-based assessment take?

Typically, these assessments last between 15 and 60 minutes, depending on the game’s complexity and the number of skills being tested. They’re usually shorter and more engaging than traditional assessments, making for a smoother candidate experience.

Are game-based assessments suitable for all roles?

They are especially effective for roles that require flexibility, creativity, problem-solving, and strong interpersonal skills. For highly technical or specialized roles, additional assessments may be needed to measure specific knowledge.

What’s the difference between a game-based and a gamified assessment?

A gamified assessment adds game-like elements (such as points or rewards) to a traditional test to increase engagement. A game-based assessment, on the other hand, is a standalone game designed specifically to evaluate certain competencies. The game itself is the primary evaluation tool, not just an enhancement.
